Common Questions
Factual answers to evaluation-phase buyer objections
Why does this work without my recipes?
Menu Profit Lab starts with publicly available USDA food price data and published restaurant menu ingredients to establish baseline cost ratios. These ratios are validated and refined as you input your actual menu data over time. The model does not require exact recipe specs to produce actionable menu engineering insights — it works on cost-per-serving ratios weighted by item popularity and menu placement.
How accurate is the ingredient cost data?
The baseline database uses USDA ERS food price indices updated quarterly, blended with national distributor list prices. Accuracy at the regional level is estimated at ±12–18% for commodity items. You can override any ingredient cost with your actual distributor pricing to tighten the analysis precision. In practice, operators with per-location cost overrides report accuracy within ±5% of their own P&L figures.
How long does onboarding take?
Self-serve onboarding for the Starter plan targets under 15 minutes for a single location: upload a PDF or CSV menu, confirm location count, and receive an initial profit score report. Growth and Scale plans include a 30-minute onboarding call and optional data migration assistance. The primary onboarding variable is menu data format quality — structured CSVs load faster than PDF menus.
What's the cancellation policy?
Month-to-month subscriptions can be cancelled from the end of the current billing period with no cancellation fees. Annual plans billed upfront are eligible for a pro-rated refund within the first 30 days of the contract year. There are no multi-year lock-in commitments. Data export in CSV and JSON formats is available at any time, including upon cancellation.
Do you offer discounts for multiple locations?
Volume pricing is available at 6+ locations and is handled under the Scale plan or custom negotiated agreements. Standard per-location rate cards apply for 1–5 locations. Contact sales for a quote if you are evaluating at 5 or more locations simultaneously. We do not offer referral discounts or promotional codes for new locations added mid-contract.
How does this compare to hiring a restaurant consultant?
A menu engineering engagement with a professional consultant typically costs $2,000–$10,000 for a single location, with ongoing retained advisory at $500–$2,000/mo. Menu Profit Lab automates the quantitative portion of that analysis — item profit scoring, mix-weighted margin calculation, and plate-cost normalization — reducing the consultant's billable hours by an estimated 40–60% on menu strategy work. It is not a replacement for strategic brand positioning or concept development.
Is my menu data used to train your AI models?
No. Your uploaded menu data and any proprietary cost inputs are isolated to your account and are not used to train, fine-tune, or otherwise contribute to shared AI models used across the platform. Model training updates are applied using de-identified, aggregated industry data. This is documented in our Data Processing Agreement (DPA) and applies across all plan tiers. Enterprise DPAs with standard contractual terms are available upon request.
