Common Questions
How does Menu Profit Lab calculate food cost per item?
You enter ingredient quantities and unit costs either manually or via spreadsheet import. The tool multiplies each ingredient cost by the quantity used per serving to produce a plate cost. Food cost percentage is then derived as (plate cost ÷ menu price) × 100. You can update vendor costs at any time; the tool recalculates affected items automatically.
For operators syncing via POS, sales volume data is pulled in alongside your ingredient cost updates, enabling plate cost recalculation at scale across your full menu.
Do I need to manually enter my full menu?
Initial setup supports manual entry via spreadsheet import (CSV/Excel) or direct input. The onboarding workflow is designed to minimize friction: operators with a defined menu board and vendor invoices can complete setup in under 10 minutes. If you use Lightspeed, Toast, or Square, POS sync pulls menu items and sales data automatically, reducing manual data entry to ingredient costs only.
Public ingredient price databases are available within the tool to pre-populate common ingredient costs if you don't have vendor invoices on hand.
Is my restaurant's sales and cost data secure?
Menu Profit Lab stores data in encrypted at-rest storage and encrypts data in transit using TLS 1.2+. The platform is SOC 2 Type II audited. Restaurant operators retain full ownership of their data; we do not use your menu or sales data to train models for other customers. You can export or delete your data at any time from the account settings.
How long does it take to see actionable margin insights?
Most operators have their full menu entered and at least one cost analysis run within the first session. Actionable insights — such as flagging items with food cost above 35% or identifying your top-margin menu items — are available immediately after your initial menu data is loaded. Meaningful before/after margin comparisons require 4–6 weeks of sales data post-optimization.
What POS systems does Menu Profit Lab integrate with?
Direct POS sync is currently available for Lightspeed Restaurant, Toast POS, and Square for Restaurants. Sync frequency is daily by default, with weekly cost recalculation. Manual data entry remains fully supported for operators using other systems or paper-based ordering.
Can I use this for seasonal menu planning and limited-time offers?
Yes. Menu Profit Lab supports tagging items as seasonal or limited-time. You can model LTO pricing against projected ingredient costs before launch. When a seasonal ingredient's vendor cost changes, the tool alerts you so you can reprice or retire the item proactively rather than absorbing margin erosion silently.
